Saturday night saw an entertaining battle as Sheffields’s Kell Brook took on Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin for his WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles.
Special K as he is known by many courageously moved up 2 weight divisions and put his unbeaten record on the line to challenge the hugely avoided hard hitting middleweight. Unlike so many others before him Kell certainly came just to win and not to just survive and even at times pushed GGG back frustrating him by picking him off on the way in and making him miss more than we have seen before.
Brook looked stunned and in trouble half way through the 1st round as Golovkin landed a crushing left hook but recovered well and made it clear GGG weren’t going to get everything his own way like he was so often used to. Over the next few rounds Brook certainly made an interesting fight of it and asked questions Golovkin has never been asked in his professional career.
Brook, arguably the best fighter to challenge the champion looked like he was starting to feel the pace by the end of the 4th and his rival sensing this came rushing out in the 5th piling relentless pressure on the British star leaving his trainer Dominic Ingle with no choice but to throw in the towel to save his fighter from any further harm.
One thing for certain is although suffering his first loss the 30 year old can hold his head up high and be proud of his achievements. It is thought Brook may now go down to 154lb with plenty of options open to him once he has recovered while Golovkin is looking at a possible big money showdown with Canelo providing he can defeat Liverpool’s Liam Smith on Saturday which is certainly not a done deal.
